"We were surprised," Chris Howe said Monday afternoon, Jan. 2, from his wife's bedside at Harrison County Hospital in Corydon, where his daughter, Livvy Ann, was born early Sunday morning, Jan. 1.

Their two sons — Quigley, 4, and Warren, 21 months — were born pretty much on their due dates.

Jenny said she had packed her hospital bag on Saturday, Dec. 31, in preparation of her Jan. 20 due date then she went to bed at about 7:30 p.m.

"The boys have been wearing me out," she said of the couple's sons.

The last thing she said before going to sleep was she hoped the baby would allow her to get a good night's rest.

Chris spent New Year's Eve watching movies with Quigley before going to bed about 30 minutes after midnight.

But, an hour into his sleep, Chris was awakened by Jenny saying it was time to go to the hospital, her water had broken. They grabbed their bags, dropped off the boys at a relative's home and headed for HCH, where Jenny was admitted at about 3 p.m. At 6:02 a.m., Livvy Ann Howe arrived, weighing 6 pounds, 4 ounces. She was 20 inches long.

"She was really calm," Chris said of his wife.

"My doctor (Joseph Sauer) thinks I never get excited," Jenny said. "I'm pretty laid back."

The couple, who have an English address but live in Perry County, had no clue their third child would be a girl, opting to be surprised, although most everyone in the family was hoping for a girl.

"We're short on girls," Jenny said.

"I was just hoping for a healthy baby," said Chris, who works at Daramic in Corydon.

The Howes said Quigley was excited to have a baby sister, while Warren just wanted his mommy to be back at home.

Grandparents are Lou Ann and Billy Walton of Leopold, Kenny and Lois Austin of Leavenworth and Gary and Sharon Howe of Eckerty. Great-grandmothers are Phylis Goldman of Leavenworth and Bertie Austin of English.

The last time Harrison County Hospital had the first baby born on Jan. 1 was in 2009, at 5:35 a.m.
