Police pursuit ends in deadly vehicle crash

Marengo Town Council special meeting tonight

August 21, 2013
A police pursuit that allegedly began when a motorist with defective taillights refused to pull over ended in a crash that killed one person Friday night.

According to the Indiana State Police, Marengo Marshal James Harrington attempted to stop a 1991 GMC pickup driven by Robert Michael Banet, 44, of Leavenworth. Banet, however, refused to stop, and Harrington gave chase. The pursuit traveled north approximately one mile on Valeene Road when Banet lost control and hit a tree.

Banet was airlifted to University of Louisville Hospital for treatment of non-life-threatening injuries, but his passenger, Jeannine Marie Farrell, 56, of Mauckport, was pronounced dead at the scene by the Crawford County Coroner's Office.

Troopers from the ISP Jasper Post were called to investigate the crash. Once the investigation is complete, all findings will be turned over to the Crawford County Prosecutor's Office for review and determination of charges.

Peggy Bullington, a member of the Marengo Town Council, on Monday said the council has called a special meeting for tonight (Wednesday). The council will meet in a closed executive session at 6.
