Woman accused of scamming business patrons

October 09, 2013
A Vallonia woman was arrested Friday after allegedly attempting to scam customers at area businesses.

Rebecca Hodge, 47, was taken into custody and charged with Class D felony theft and making a false identity statement, a Class A misdemeanor.

Trooper Timothy Weisenberger of the Indiana State Police said in an affidavit that he was getting gas at Pappy's gas station in Eckerty when the attendant informed him that a woman, later identified as Hodge, was asking other customers for money. At the same time, another person stopped to tell Weisenberger that the woman had been soliciting customers at other businesses earlier in the day, he said.

The person said they had been at the JayC and that Hodge also was there, saying she needed $30 to get to Kosair Children's Hospital, but that the store would not process a money order because she had left her purse at work and didn't have identification.

"Upon approaching Ms. Hodge at Pappy's based upon the information that she was soliciting money by lying to customers and that she had an active warrant, I asked her for identification," Weisenberger said. "She replied that she did not have I.D."

He said Hodge then gave him an incorrect name, date of birth and Social Security number.

"By the manner in which she was pausing with the information, I believed her to be lying and informed her to tell me truthful information," Weisenberger said.

Hodge then admitted to lying and told him her name, but the date of birth she gave still was incorrect based on identification he found in her purse, which was in her vehicle, he said.

It was also discovered that Hodge had an active warrant from Kentucky, Weisenberger said.

The Crawford County Sheriff's Department believes Hodge may have attempted to solicit money at other businesses, as well as churches.
