Crawford SWCD seeks candidates for supervisor position

October 23, 2013
The Crawford County Soil and Water Conservation District is looking for persons with an interest in natural resources management who would like to serve as a district official.

Candidates are being sought for one of the elected seats on the SWCD's five member board of supervisors. The term of office runs from February 2014 through February 2017. The election will be held at the annual meeting on Feb. 1 at 8 a.m. at the Crawford County Junior-Senior High School cafeteria.

The Crawford County SWCD is a legal subdivision of state government responsible for the protection, conservation and use of the soil, water and related natural resources within the county. Working cooperatively with federal, state and local agencies and organizations, the SWCD brings educational, technical and financial assistance to bear on the conservation problems of the county.

Activities of the district are directed by the five supervisors, three elected by the local land users and two appointed by the State Soil Conservation Board. Meetings are held on the first Monday of each month where the supervisors plan and oversee the efforts aimed at fulfilling the SWCD's responsibilities, which include:

Assessing natural resources management needs within the county.

Developing and implementing policies and programs that address those assessed needs.

Carrying out program initiatives given to SWCDs by state and federal government and advise local government on natural resource management issues.

As compensation for their service, supervisors can receive salary per diem when engaged in district business. Candidates for Crawford County SWCD's elected supervisor position must be an occupier of a tract of land that is located within the district, must maintain the individual's permanent residence within the district and must be qualified by training and experience to perform the duties that this article imposes on supervisors.

Currently serving on the Crawford County SWCD Board of Supervisors are Kenny Sturgeon, Richard Langdon, Andy Howell, Garry Brown and Billy Joe Walker. Walker's term is set to expire in February, and he will seek re-election. Rhonda Crecelius serves as SWCD office manager. The SWCD also has 12 associate supervisors who contribute their individual talents on an as-needed basis.

For more information about the Crawford County SWCD, its programs, supervisor duties and qualifications and the specific position to be filled or to register as a candidate, visit the SWCD office at 306 Oak Hill Circle English, or call 338-3224 no later than Nov. 4.
