ORV fatality near Eckerty

July 17, 2019
A Jeffersonville man died Tuesday, July 9, when the off-road vehicle he was driving was struck by another vehicle near Eckerty.

According to Indiana conservation officers, George E. Williams, 80, was traveling on Kaiser Road in a Bush Hog 440 side-by-side-style ORV and was attempting to cross S.R. 64 when he pulled out in front of a Dodge Caravan being driven by Lawrence Gale Basham, 77, of Tell City.

Basham, according to authorities, attempted to avoid the collision, but was unsuccessful. Williams was pronounced dead at the scene. Basham was transported to Memorial Hospital and Health Care Center in Jasper with leg pain.

Conservation officers stress safe operation of ORVs and the use of proper protective equipment such as helmets. For more information on off-road vehicle safety, see offroaded.com/indiana.

Conservation officers were assisted by the Crawford County Sheriff's Department and Crawford County Emergency Medical Services.
