Louisville junior right-hander Jeff Thompson was selected as Big East Baseball Pitcher of the Week on March 11 following his strong performance in the nationally ranked Cardinals' win over Alabama last weekend.
Thompson, a former Floyd Central High School standout, allowed only two hits while striking out four in seven shutout innings to help guide Louisville to its 6-0 series-clinching win over the Crimson Tide on Saturday afternoon at Jim Patterson Stadium. This marks the second time Thompson has been named Big East Pitcher of the Week in 2013 after he previously won the award on Feb. 18 for his 12-strikeout, shutout performance against USF during the opening weekend of the season.
The March 9 performance against Alabama marked the third time in his four starts this season Thompson has not allowed a run. Overall, he is 4-0 with a minuscule 0.73 ERA and 29 strikeouts in 24.2 innings this season while opposing batters are hitting only .155 against him.
