North Harrison tops Crawford for 20th win

May 22, 2019
The North Harrison Lady Cats set a milestone last Wednesday afternoon when they won their 20th game of the softball season by overpowering host Crawford County, 19-1, in five innings.

"This is a big deal for our program," North Harrison coach Haley Book said. "These girls have worked very hard to get to this point."

"We started out playing well," Crawford County senior Addy Simpson said. "But we just had way too many errors."

North Harrison didn't get that great of a start with a lone two-out single by Kendall Beyerle in the top of the first. Beyerle later tried to grab an extra base going for second on a steal, but Simpson was there to catch the throw and tag Beyerle to end the Lady Cats' first at-bat.

In the bottom of the inning, the Lady Pack drew first blood. Maddie Sargent, Cheyenne Pierpoint and Autumn Kerce hit three straight singles off North Harrison pitcher Grace Roberts to load the bases. Simpson then hit into a fielder's choice, but it allowed Sargent to score. Hanaa Ashley and Lacey Bockting finished the inning by popping out, but Crawford County was out in front.

The Lady Cats then took over in a hitting onslaught. Jada Peyton and Andrea Reese started the inning with a pair of singles. With one out, Roberts pounded a long single to score both runners and went to second on the throw to home. Jaden Wingler grounded out, but a Crawford County throwing mistake allowed courtesy runner Maddie Ivey to score.

Brianna Fawver hit on safely when the Lady Pack committed two more errors, with Fawver taking advantage of the situation by going to third. Isabella Gerlach followed with a triple to score Fawver, and the Lady Cats had a 4-1 lead.

After Crawford County went three up and down in the bottom of the inning, the Lady Cats launched their biggest offensive of the day.

Beyerle singled and stole second. She then scored as Peyton reached base after another Crawford County error, going to second. Ness and Emily Ingle both singled. Roberts reached first on yet another Lady Pack mistake, with Ness scoring for a 6-1 lead.

Wingler singled to score Ingle, and Ivey and Winger were pushed across the plate on a Fawver triple. Gerlach then singled to score Fawver.

Still with no outs, Kaitlyn Crone singled and later scored, along with Gerlach, when Peyton drilled a triple. Ness also rapped a single to score Peyton, and the Lady Cats' lead suddenly ballooned to 13-1.

Roberts kept Crawford County off the bases as the Lady Pack went down in order in the bottom of the third inning.

In the top of the fourth, North Harrison added six more runs to lead 19-1.

The Lady Pack failed to score in both the fourth and fifth innings as North Harrison went on to get the win.

"We just want to stay aggressive," Book said. "That's the mindset we've made for these girls."

The Lady Cats finished with 22 hits, with Ness hitting for four singles and Peyton getting three singles and a triple. Beyerle had three hits, all for singles, and Gerlach had a single, double and triple. Crone and Wingler added two hits each for the Lady Cats. From the pitching circle, Roberts had one strikeout and no walks. North Harrison had just one error and left five runners on base.

Crawford County had just three hits, all in the first inning. Pierpoint, from the pitching circle, had no walks but also no strikeouts. The Lady Pack had seven errors and left three runners on base.

Crawford County began its post-season tournament run against Providence on Monday in the Class 2A Clarksville Sectional, while the Lady Cats faced county rival and host Corydon Central in the Class 3A sectional yesterday (Tuesday).
