March 26, 2008 He's not ashamed to admit he bleeds blue. Greg Oppel takes the helm of the North Harrison High School baseball program, taking over for Rick Parr, who moved on to an assistant coach role at Morehead State University.
Oppel graduated from North Harrison and was a standout baseball player. He was an honorable mention All-State performer and played in the North-South All-Star game. He went on to play for former Cougar coach Gary Redman at Southern Indiana University and later for a semi-professional team out of Louisville.
Oppel has been heavily involved as a referee and umpire at various levels of basketball and baseball in the area. He coaches summer ball for former Cougar skipper Danny Schmidt along with staying involved with the baseball program at Morgan Elementary School.
Last season, Oppel was an assistant under Parr for the sectional champion Cougars.
"Coach Parr and I have been together for a while," Oppel said. "I owe a lot to him as a varsity baseball coach and everything he has done for this program."
Oppel said he hopes to lead the Cougars to compete for sectional and regional titles every year.
