Primary election

April 09, 2008
Incumbent Edna M. Brown is being challenged in the Democratic Primary by Allison (Jan Parke) Barrow, who currently is a deputy in the Crawford County Recorder's Office. No Republican filed for the GOP Primary.

Allison (Jan Parke) Barrow (D)

Address: 1792 S. Magnolia Road, English

Spouse: Kent Barrow

Children: TC Sorenson, Shawnie Sorenson, Jordan Barrow and Jonah Barrow

Occupation: Deputy recorder

School and year graduated: Crawford County Junior-Senior High School 1990

Political affiliation: Democrat

Duties of position: Collection of real estate and personal property taxes. Collecting inheritance and innkeepers taxes. Balance and report collections of all taxes.

Why are seeking this office?: My years and experience in county government has taught me to understand the importance of maintaining accurate records and meeting specific deadlines. I am running for office because I know I can do these things and run the office in a professional manner.

What qualifies you for the office?: I previously worked in the Treasurer's Office. I started in 1998. Kathy Grider was the treasurer at that time. Then, I went to work for Dawn Wright in the Recorder's Office in 2004. I know the Treasurer's Office and the duties of the office. I have six years experience in the Treasurer's Office.

What do you consider the top issues in the campaign?: The changes in property taxes will be a big issue. Whether or not you like to pay them, they have to be collected. And it is the duty of the office to understand the changes and collect the taxes.

Previous political experience: Liberty Township Trustee 1999 through March 2004. Appointed treasurer in April 2004. Finished out term of Don DuBois when he took economic development position. Then, won election 11/04, and I am in the last months of that term.

Duties of position sought: Treasurer — collecting property taxes; inheritance tax; innkeepers tax; receipt monies for county funds. Receipt Excise Tax. Reconcile daily cash sheet. Reconcile monthly reports. Reconcile three bank statements. Perform tax sale direct deposits. Garnishments of state and county employee. Mobile home moving permits and title transfers.

Why are you seeking the office?: I enjoy this type of work. I like dealing with the public and being there to help the public.

What qualifies you for the office?: I feel my 35-plus years of banking experience, where I worked with the public serving on the teller line and was head of the bookkeeping department for many years, qualifies me for the position of county treasurer.

What do you consider top issues in the campaign?: Lower property taxes. Getting all data in a timely manner so the tax bills would be due twice a year (May and November). This would help the taxpayer not be burdened with paying taxes all in one lump sum.
