April 30, 2008 A Marengo woman died in a single-vehicle accident Sunday on S.R. 64 when her car left the roadway and struck a tree.
Helen Pitman, 85, who lived at 490 S. Cedar St., was traveling west about 300 feet east of the Marengo Roadside Park when her vehicle, a 1982 Oldsmobile, struck a guardrail twice on the north side of the road. After the second impact, the vehicle went over the top of the guardrail and collided with a tree.
Crawford County Coroner Chris Brown pronounced Pitman deceased at the scene.
The English Volunteer Fire Department, assisted by Marengo firefighter, had to extricate Pitman from the vehicle, which was damaged extensively.
Crawford County Sheriff's Deputies Andy Beals and Scott Hosier also assisted.
Pitman was a graduate of Marengo High School and was a member of Marengo Christian Church.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Herman C. Pitman; a sister, Dorothy Seacat; and her parents.
Survivors include two sons, Herman E. Pitman and Donald E. Pitman; a brother, Ralph Hanger; four grandchildren; and a great-grandson.
Visitation was yesterday (Tuesday) and will be today from 9 a.m. to noon at Dillman-Green Funeral Home in Marengo.
The funeral will be today at 1 p.m. at Marengo Christian Church.
