Five VFDs battle fire north of Depauw
May 07, 2008 Five volunteer fire departments — Palmyra, Milltown, Harrison Township, Marengo and Ramsey — responded to a woods fire at 2:50 p.m. Thursday in the 13000 block of Blue River Ridge Road north of Depauw.
"A couple of guys were burning junk metal and the fire got away from them," said Lonnie Leake, Ramsey Volunteer Fire Department chief.
The dry conditions combined with 30-mph wind gusts made the fire difficult to extinguish. The fire covered 2-1/2 acres of woods, affecting two properties. Ramsey firefighters finally left the scene at 9:58 p.m., after nearly seven hours battling the fire.
"It was all woods. With the dry conditions and the terrain, it all had to be done by hand," Leake said.
Firefighters were able to use a bulldozer to clear a path to get their apparatuses closer to the fire, he said.
