Incumbents, Holzbog get school nod

Crawford County Election

May 14, 2008
Two incumbents and a former member were elected to the Crawford County Community School Corp. Board of Trustees last Tuesday.

Debbie Kaiser, currently serving as president of the board, led the six candidates with 2,071 votes, while fellow one-term incumbent Tim Jellison finished second with 1,778 votes. Lee Holzbog, who served two terms on the school board in the1980s, grabbed the final spot as he tallied 1,640 votes.

The candidates ran by district, and only one candidate could be elected from any of the four districts, regardless of their vote totals. However, each of the top three vote-getters were from different districts Kaiser, District 1; Jellison, District 4; and Holzbog, District 3 preventing any possible confusion.

Kaiser admitted she was "surprised" to be the top vote-getter.

"I'm just hoping it's because I'm fair," she said. "I try to make the right decisions that's best for everybody."

Jellison said the past four years have been a "trying time" for school corporations because of state funding concerns, but he believes the school board has made the best of a difficult situation and has made "proactive" decisions that will benefit students.

Kaiser said she is excited about the future, noting the school board has made "some really good changes" in recent years and she wants to "continue to move forward, which I feel like we've been doing since Dr. (Mark) Eastridge came on board" as superintendent.

Jellison said he believes he is better prepared to serve now that he has already been on the board for four years. However, the board's actions will be determined by how much money is available from the state, he said.

"I think it still falls back in what we've got in terms of funding," Jellison said.

The remaining order of finish was Tim Newton, District 2, 1,553; Billy Joe Walker, District 2, 1,474; and Lloyd B. Arnold Jr., District 4, 975.

The new terms will begin July 1.
