Taswell man drowns in boating accident
June 25, 2008
A Taswell man drowned in the Ohio River Sunday afternoon when a thunderstorm caused the boat he was in to take on water.
Derrick Adams, 29, was fishing with friends, Ross Polen and Josh Decker, near Cannelton Dam when the storm came into the area about 3:30 p.m. The storm created hazardous boating conditions.
According to a report by Indiana Conservation Officers, Polen and Decker said that they began to head back to shore when the 14-foot flat bottom boat they were in began to take on water over the bow. The boat quickly filled with water and was abandoned by the three men. Decker and Polen were able to remove one personal flotation device from the boat and clung to it. Witnesses said that Adams attempted to swim to the Kentucky shore.
Witnesses on the bank called 911, and a rescue operation began. Perry County Rescue quickly launched a boat and was able to remove Polen and Decker from the water. Adams disappeared under the water before rescuers were able to reach him. None of the men were wearing life vests at the time of the accident.
Perry County rescue divers, along with divers from Kentucky, entered the water in an attempt to locate Adams. Indiana Conservation Officers then arrived with their side-scan sonar unit. Within minutes, the officers were able to locate Adams. Indiana Conservation Officers then entered the water and recovered Adam's body.
Kentucky Fish and Wildlife Officers are investigating the drowning.
