Fired up for the 4th

Crawford to celebrate freedom

July 02, 2008
Celebration of Independence Day will begin a little early this year, as the Crawford County Fourth of July Festival will kick off today (Wednesday) and run through the Fourth itself, highlighted by a fireworks display from atop the Marengo Warehouse and Distribution Center.

Today's events will include a Senior Ms. Pageant for ladies ages 65 and older (new for this year) and a Junior Miss Pageant for ages 10 to 12. The Senior Ms. Pageant will be at 5 p.m. on the main stage downtown, while the Junior Miss Pageant will be at 6 on the stage. Contestants for both pageants may be from anywhere, not just Crawford County. The deadline to enter was June 20.

Thursday's events will include vendor booths and inflatables opening at 4 p.m., with a hymn sing featuring Danny Jones, Fred Higgins, Mark and Renee Manship and Marengo Wesleyan Church from 5 to 7. Walk around magic will be from 6 to 8, and the Crawford County Community Band will perform at 7. (In case of rain the hymn sing and the Crawford County Community Band will perform at Marengo Wesleyan Church.)

At 8:30 p.m., Karaoke with Holly Park will take the stage, followed by announcement of the winner of the 50/50 pot at 9. Karaoke will resume at 9:05.

On Friday, the Fourth of July itself, vendor booths and inflatables will open at 10 a.m., and the car show (antiques, tractors and motorcycles are encouraged to participate) on Water Street will begin at 11, with judging throughout the day and trophies presented at 4 p.m.

The Marengo American Legion will again have a chicken barbecue at the Legion Park south of town from noon to 4.

Line-up for the parade will be at 5 p.m. at Marengo Elementary School, with the parade starting at 6. This year's parade will feature a different route (it will NOT go south of Union Street). Contact the town hall at 365-2158 or look for the gold flyers around the county. Entries wanting to be judged must be pre-registered by Thursday at noon. In addition, there will be restrictions on four-wheelers this year. They include: being pre-registered, having a registration sticker on the ATV, and being fully decorated.

Tom and Katie Crecelius will present a magic show on Bradley Street at 7, while Lucky Records DJ's will provide entertainment from 7 to 8:30 p.m. Raffle winners will be announced on stage at 8:30, then Stone Canyon Band will take the stage at 9.

The band will stop playing at 9:30, in time for the fireworks. From 10 to midnight, live music will cap off the festival.
