North Harrison cancels all school activities until Monday

September 17, 2008
North Harrison Community School Corp. — Closed until Monday.

Dr. Ken Oppel, assistant superintendent, said all school-related activities are also canceled until Monday.

There were several factors taken into consideration for closing the school system, he said. Among those are:

* Palmyra Water Co., which serves Morgan Elementary School, has issued a boil advisory.

* There are reports of downed power lines and trees on several county roads, creating a safety issue for school bus drivers and student drivers.

* Many homes in the school district are still without power. Oppel said the parents of students didn't need the extra stress of wondering about school.

Crawford County Community School Corp. — May have school tomorrow, if electricity is restored at all six of its buildings by early this evening.

Mike Key, principal at Leavenworth Elementary School, said Leavenworth, Marengo and Patoka elementaries have power, but Crawford County Junior-Senior High School and Milltown and English elementaries do not as of 11 a.m. today.

Key, who also is the corporation's transportation director, said county officials have given the corporation the OK to send out its buses.

"They assured me, if my bus drivers take it easy that we can run our routes," he said.

Parents and guardians will be notified if school is in session via the corporation's School Messenger telephone system, Key said. The system has also been used by the county's emergency officials to relay information, he added.

Key said there was no damage to any of the corporation's buildings, but a set of outside bleachers did blow over at the high school.

He said a decision on whether to have school will likely be made by about 4 p.m. Officials cannot wait too late into the evening because Leavenworth has been storing frozen food from CCJSHS and Milltown, and they need time to transport it back.
