Sunday's wind storm claims life of Milltown woman

September 17, 2008
On Sunday, during the severe wind storm, Milltown resident Karen Pevlor Duke was struck by a falling tree and suffered massive head trauma to her right temple that eventually led to her death 45 minutes later in the Harrison County Hospital around 4 p.m., said Harrison County Chief Deputy Coroner Malcom McMakin.

McMakin said that Duke had stepped out on her patio to bring in her dog when a strong gust of wind brought the tree down on her.

Milltown Chief Marshal Ray Saylor said one of her sons, Jarred, suffered a broken leg as a result of the falling tree and that her nephew, Wes Pevlor, who was also caught in the tree's path received minor injuries.

Duke was a laborer at the Masterbrand Company in Ferdinand and was of the Christian Faith.

She was preceded in death by her father, William Jay Pevlor, and grandmother, Eileen Pevlor.

She was survived by her mother, Linda Pevlor of Milltown; husband, Michael Duke of Milltown; sons, Jarred and Mark Pevlor of Milltown; daughter, Jessie Duke of Milltown; brothers, James Pevlor of Depauw and Paul Pevlor of Milltown; sister, Dawn Hensley, and several nieces and nephews.

Visitation will be on Thursday, Sept. 18, from 4 to 8 p.m. and after 10 a.m. until the service time on Friday at Beanblossom-Cesar Funeral Home in Corydon.

The funeral will be on Friday at 2 p.m. at the funeral home with burial to follow in the Union Chapel Cemetery near Milltown.

Brother Donald Laird will officiate.

Brown Funeral Home in Milltown is handling the arrangements.
