December 10, 2008 On the afternoon of Dec. 2, Randy Purlee, 58, of Salem was killed in a crash involving his semi-truck and another car on U.S. 150 near Galena.
Purlee, a driver for Koetter and Smith Wood Shavings, was forced off the road when a black Toyota Camry crossed the center-line and struck his rig head-on, said Floyd County Sheriff Darrell Mills.
The wood shavings in the over-turned semi then ignited and engulfed the vehicle in flames. Purlee was pronounced dead at the scene, Mills said.
The driver of the Camry, Patrick Best, 57, of Greenville, was airlifted to University Hospital in Louisville with serious injuries. The investigation of the crash is still underway by the Floyd County Accident Reconstruction Team. No charges have been filed.
