G'town man found dead in Louisville

Darrell Vern Spencer, 72, of Georgetown was killed Saturday in Louisville at the G & K army surplus store on West Main Street.

Officers said Spencer was severely injured and concluded that there had been foul play involved.

Spencer was taken to University Hospital in Louisville, where he was pronounced dead. The autopsy later reported his death was the result of homicidal means. No other information about the nature of Spencer's injuries was made available as his death is currently under investigation.

Spencer, an employee at G & K, was found at the store shortly before 11 a.m. on Saturday by officers who were called to the scene by a concerned relative when he did not return home the previous night.

Born April 29, 1936, in Harrison County, Spencer was the son of Clarence Spencer and Blanche Canoles Spencer Kerns.

He was a retired school teacher, an elder at Tunnel Hill Christian Church and a past member of Georgetown Masonic Lodge 480.

Survivors include his wife, the former Coletta A. House; a son, Gregory Vern Spencer of Marengo; a daughter, Catherine A. Caudill of Perry County; four grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren.

Visitation will be tomorrow (Thursday) from noon to 9 p.m. and Friday after 9 a.m. at Brown Funeral Home in Milltown. Masonic rites will be performed by members of the Georgetown Masonic Lodge tomorrow at 7:30 p.m. at the funeral home.

The funeral will be Friday at 1 p.m. at the funeral home. The Rev. Steve Stroud will officiate. Cremation was chosen.
