Former CC Commissioner Eaton passes

Former Crawford County Commissioner Chester W. Eaton of Corydon died Friday, Jan. 9, 2009, at 2:54 p.m. at Harrison Health & Rehabilitation Centre in Corydon. He was 86.

Chester Eaton
Eaton served two terms as a county commissioner and was active in the Crawford County Republican party. He also served on the Indiana Toll Bridge Commission during the terms of three Republican governor administrations.

Born April 5, 1922, in Crawford County, he was the son of the late Ernest J. Eaton and Lillie R. Abell.

Eaton served in the Air Force and was a retired real estate broker who ran his own real estate business, Eaton Real Estate, for 30 years.

For 25 years, Eaton served as president of the Crawford County Water Co., of which he was instrumental in forming.

He was a past Master of Posey Masonic Lodge 188, a lifetime member of the VFW in English and a member of Marengo Wesleyan Church, where he was a former board member.

Former Gov. Robert Orr named Eaton a Saginaw of the Wabash, Indiana's highest service award.

Survivors include his wife, the former Alice Bowman; two children, Earl Eaton of Cannelton and Sandra Sue House of White House, Tenn.; a brother, Virgil Eaton of Port Charlotte, Fla.; a sister, Dorothy Gibson of Sulphur; five grandchildren; and nine great-grandchildren.

His funeral was Monday at Marengo Wesleyan Church with burial in Leavenworth Memorial Gardens. The Revs. Philo Jones and James Wolfe officiated.
