G'town fire chief dies

February 04, 2009
On Monday, Jan. 26, Georgetown Fire Chief James F. (Jim) Kron passed away suddenly at his home at the age of 66.

Kron was the first chief of the new Georgetown Fire District, which formed in 2007. Kron previously served 44 years with the New Albany Fire Department in every capacity except fire chief.

Kron's extensive career included many years as a trainer and a teacher with the Indiana Fire Instructors Association from whom he once received Fire Instructor of the Year. He was the founder of the New Albany Fire School and taught classes at the Jasper Fire School, as well as other places.

His legacy as a firefighter will be carried on through his son, Tim Kron, who is an active member of the NAFD.

Kron's funeral this past Saturday at Georgetown Christian Church was attended by more than a hundred firefighters from the region, as well as EMS workers and police officers who knew him.

He was given a traditional firefighter's funeral service with a color guard and two fire trucks holding up a large American flag with their ladders. The ladders were later extended over S.R. 64 as the funeral procession passed underneath.
