Trio escape from BCF

March 25, 2009
Three inmates, including one arrested last year in Harrison County who is serving a 20-year sentence for burglary, escaped Friday from Branchville Correctional Facility in northeastern Perry County.

The inmates — Bobby Cockerell, Christopher Marshall and Jerry Sargent — were last accounted for at about 9:15 Friday morning and are believed to have stolen a truck in St. Croix, about five miles north of the prison, early Sunday morning and driven to northern Kentucky.

The truck, a 1989 Ford F-250, was reported missing shortly after 8 a.m. Sunday and found later that day abandoned on Interstate 71 in Kentucky about 30 miles south of Cincinnati.

Marshall and Sargent were assigned to the welding shop at the Branchville prison, designated by the Indiana Department of Correction as a medium-security facility, and are believed to have been involved in the assault of a maintenance worker prior to their escape.

The method of escape is still under investigation, and the maintenance worker was airlifted to University Hospital in Louisville.

Cockerell, 31, from Jeffersonville, is serving a 20-year sentence for burglary with an earliest possible release date of 2016. He was arrested last June in Harrison County. The 6-foot-2-inch Cockerell is white, weighs 220 pounds and has brown eyes and brown hair.

Marshall, 49, is from Monon and is serving a 50-year sentence for dealing cocaine with an earliest possible release date of 2021. He is 5 feet 8 inches tall, weighs 188 pounds, is white and has green eyes and brown hair.

Sargent, 59, from Dryer Ridge, Ky., is serving a 50-year sentence for robbery and criminal confinement with an earliest possible release date of 2023. Approximately 6 feet 5 inches tall and 210 pounds, Sargent, who is white, has blue eyes and red hair.

IDOC officials consider all three men dangerous. Anyone with information is asked to contact the Indiana State Police Jasper Post at 1-812-482-1441 or 1-800-742-7475, the IDOC Fugitive Apprehension Unit at 1-317-233-3416 or their local law enforcement agencies or to call 911.

The escape is the second from the Branchville prison within a year, as two inmates broke out of the facility last April 4.

According to the IDOC Web site, in 2007, Branchville Correctional Facility had an average daily population of 1,330 offenders.
