Crawford errors costly against Lady Jeeps

April 22, 2009
Errors outweighed runs for the Crawford County softball team last Wednesday afternoon as the visiting Northeast Dubois Lady Jeeps held off a late surge to come away with a 5-3 win. It's not been a good start for the Lady Pack, with the team still looking for its first win.

"We're 0-5 right now," Crawford coach Lonnie Presley said. "The freshmen girls aren't doing it. It's senior girls that's making the mental mistakes. It's girls that have played all the time. There's not much you can do about it, not much I can do about it."

Neither team scored in the first two innings, but Crawford finally got on the board in the bottom of the third. Trista Wyman singled and moved to second base on a Carolyn Pellman sacrifice bunt. She went to third on a Kim Holzbog ground out and then came home when Amanda Toney singled.

The Lady Jeeps tied things up in the fourth inning. A two-out error allowed Rachel Britweiser to reach base. Nicole Seitz then hit a long ball to left field to score Britweiser. Seitz tried to stretch her double into a triple, but Crawford got the throw into Andi Suddharth for the tag to end the inning.

After Crawford went three-up-and-out in the bottom of the fourth inning, the Lady Jeeps put more pressure on the Lady Pack in the fifth. MacKenzie Dorsam and Taylor Hasenour started things with back-to-back doubles for the first run. With one out following a fielder's choice, Paige Schepers also doubled to score Hasenour.

Then came Crawford's costliest error of the game. The Lady Pack booted a routine infield play with an errant throw, allowing Tasha Schepers and Paige Schepers to score for a 4-1 Dubois lead.

"They've got to want to play," a frustrated Presley said.

Crawford loaded the bases in the bottom of the fifth inning, but failed to convert.

Dubois then scored again following a Dorsam triple for a 5-1 advantage. Crawford stopped a bases-loaded situation for the Lady Jeeps, then worked to try to get back in the game in the bottom of the seventh.

Pellman and Holzbog walked and advanced on stolen bases. Pellman scored from third on a passed ball, and Holzbog moved to third. Toney grounded out to third base, but Holzbog came home to close the gap to two. After Chelsea Benham lined to Seitz for the second out, Tori McLain kept Crawford alive with a single, but Suddharth grounded to first base for the game's final out.

"We didn't give up, and I told them that," Presley said. "But why put yourself in that situation there? We gave them every run they had with errors, overthrowing and mental stuff."

Crawford finished with five hits, but made four errors. Kayla Parr struggled on the mound, striking out just one, walking five and hitting one. The Lady Pack left nine runners on base.

The Lady Jeeps had eight hits, made two errors and left 12 runners on base. Nicole Dorsam struck out five Crawford batters while walking three.

Presley said he may have drastically change his lineup.

"The way I'm going to deal with it, I told them, 'I'm going to give you half the season. After half the season, I'm going to play freshmen,' '' he said. "If I have to lose, I'm going to lose with freshmen."
