Investigation continues in toddler's death

April 29, 2009
Authorities are still investigating the self-inflicted shooting death of a 2-year-old girl last week.

Alexis Berlynn Camp died Monday, April 20, after, according to authorities, she found a loaded semi-automatic handgun left at a undisclosed location in her home at 7250 Speed Road and was able to pull the trigger.

The child's stepfather and mother, Jared and Jessica Conrad, were in the room when the girl fired the weapon. Emergency responders were summoned around 7:06 p.m.

Police said the handgun belonged to Jared Conrad, a reserve officer with the Crawford County Sheriff's Department and a firefighter with the Milltown Volunteer Fire Department.

Crawford County Pros-ecutor Cheryl Hillenburg declined to comment, only saying that the investigation is ongoing.

Camp was also the daughter of Kevin Camp of English.

An account has been set up at Community First Bank in Leavenworth to help with funeral expenses. Donations to the fund, in the name of Angie Hughes, the girl's grandmother, can be made at any Community First Bank.

Following last week's incident, the Indiana State Police released the following gun safety tips:

•Secure firearms by locking them in a gun safe or utilizing gun locks.

•Keep ammunition separate from the guns.

•Educate children about gun safety, including knowing to never play with guns.

•Tell children that if they find a gun to immediately leave the area and tell a trusted adult about the location of the firearm.

Free gun locks are available at the Crawford County Sheriff's Department.
