Floyd sweeps chilling NH 3-way meet

April 29, 2009
Floyd Central swept both the boys' and girls' divisions during a three-way track meet last Tuesday at North Harrison as both cold wind and rain made it tough on runners and spectators alike.

The Lady Highlanders dominated their division by winning 12 of the 15 events, finishing 37 points ahead of North Harrison. The boys' division was much closer, coming down to the final event in the pole vault, with the Highlanders finishing 80-79 over the Cougars.

The cold, west wind made it rough on runners racing toward the finish line. Floyd Central junior Nikki Roberts, who won both the 100-meter and 300-meter hurdle events, said the wind forced her to change her steps.

"It's way harder," she said. "The wind pushes me back so much I have to four-step (in the 100-meter hurdles). It really makes it hard."

Roberts' time of 18 seconds in the 100-meter hurdles was well above the 16.4-second school record time the junior is hoping to beat. However, that's not Roberts' only goal.

"I want to make regional this year," she said. "The competition's harder this year."

In the boys' division, North Harrison's Tyler Byrne won the 1,600- and 3,200-meter distance events. Byrne, who also anchored the Cougars to a win in the 3,200-meter relay, finished the 1,600 meters in a time of 4:37 and the 3,200 meters in 10:01, well above what he hopes to run in the post season. Byrne has a goal of 4 minutes, 12 seconds in the 1,600 meters and is already close to that, running a personal best of 4:18 the week before at Franklin.

"Pretty brutal," he said of the conditions. "You can definitely feel it when you're running. Your hands go numb after the first couple of laps. On the front you can feel it pretty good. It slows you down."

Crawford County's Jordan Newkirk had to settle for second place in the boys' high jump, behind Jared Richards of North Harrison. Newkirk said leg problems have slowed his progress in the early part of the season, but he hopes to be well enough to be a serious competitor at the Patoka Lake Athletic Conference meet in May.

"I've had shin splints lately," he said after his 5-10 performance in the event. "I'm trying to heal from them for conference. By the end of the year, I'd like to clear 6-4 or 6-5 and win conference and make regional."

Richards was the only three-event winner of the day. Besides his six-foot win in the high jump, he also won the 110-meter highs and 300-meter intermediate hurdles.

"The 110 (hurdles) were rough because I was running back and forth to the high jump," Richards said. "I got to the second and third hurdles and hit them. I couldn't get composed and my steps got off. I did better in the (300 hurdles). I told myself I wasn't going to lose. I warmed up good and gave it all I got in the turns."

All three teams hope to be near their peak by the middle of May for their respective conference and post-season meets.
