Woman dies in Eckerty collision

May 13, 2009
A woman was killed and her mother seriously injured in a two-vehicle crash last Wednesday near Eckerty.

Bridget Marie Libby, 42, of Corydon, who had received her driver's license that day, was driving west on S.R. 64 when her vehicle, a 1996 Chevy Lumina, failed to stop at the intersection with S.R. 37. Her mother, Gayle Humes, 60, of Depauw, was a passenger.

A Chevy pickup truck driven by Oscar Hoffman, 61, of Dubois County, was northbound on S.R. 37 and, Hoffman told police, was traveling at 55 mph when Libby's vehicle entered the intersection without stopping. The driver of the truck slammed on his brakes, but he could not stop in time and struck the driver's side of Libby's vehicle. Hoffman's wife, Linda, was a passenger in the truck.

"According to a witness, Libby was attempting to make a left at the intersection," Crawford County Sheriff's Deputy Debbie Young said.

"But she never made a complete stop, and pulled out in front of the northbound pickup truck. According to my computer printout, Libby had renewed her learner's permit several times through the years, but had just gotten a valid driver's license that day."

Oscar Hoffman complained of neck and leg pain, and all four people involved were transported to Jasper Memorial Hospital, where Libby was pronounced dead. Humes was later transported to a hospital in Louisville and was reported to be in stable condition with a possible broken hip and fractured ribs.

Libby's funeral was Monday at St. Michael's Catholic Church in Bradford with burial in Mount Zion Cemetery in Depauw.
