Young Cats blank Brownstown, 1-0

May 20, 2009
With a pair of seniors sidelined with injuries, North Harrison hosted Mid-Southern Conference rival Brownstown Central with a lineup of three freshmen, three sophomores, one junior and two seniors.

There were no worries from the young group, which backed up a big pitching performance from senior Mary Robertson with flawless fielding, to defeat Brownstown Central, 1-0.

"This is our first shutout of the season, and it came against a good Brownstown team," North Harrison coach John Lambert said. "Mary is starting to find it. We let her and a few other kids realize that it is getting down to crunch time, and she has certainly stepped up."

Robertson also scored on the game's lone run. In the bottom of the third inning, sophomore Brittini Sears led off with a single. Senior Kayla Lambert and Robertson grounded into fielder's choices. With Robertson on first, freshman Amber Longest belted a line drive over the glove of the Lady Brave center fielder, plating the run.

Out of the nine hole, Sears finished the game with a pair of hits.

"Our girls put the ball in play and put pressure on them," Lambert said.

Robertson allowed three hits in the circle and struck out five batters to run her record to a perfect 6-0.

Thursday's game also was the first without senior center fielder Sasha Grangier, who is sidelined with an injury. The defense made adjustments and, more importantly, made the plays.

"This was our first game without her, but we moved Alyssa (McAfee) over to center field and she made a couple great plays out there," Lambert said. "Our defense was tremendous. Courtney Crone was outstanding at first base, and our third base and shortstop made great plays as well. It was just an all-around effort."

The win puts North Harrison at 6-1 in the MSC and 11-6 overall. The team hosts Jeffersonville tomorrow (Thursday) at 5 p.m.
