Crawford revved up for fair

July 08, 2009
It's once again time for the Crawford County 4-H Fair, and this year's week-long schedule promises even more fun activities for fair-goers.

The last two days of this year's fair — Saturday through Sunday, July 19 — will feature the debut of the new dirt track at the Crawford County 4-H Community Park.

Both local and non-local drivers will roar and slide, as well as bump and jump, on the track as they try to earn points in this season's Mid America Off Road Association circuit.

(For more about the track and MAORA, see story, front page.)

Those with an insatiable appetite for power and need for speed won't be disappointed, as the fair will have plenty of both, beyond the MAORA races, on several evenings, beginning with a traditional smash hit, the demotion derby on Saturday.

Monster truck rides are slated for Monday through Thursday, while an enduro and roll-over contest is set for Wednesday. Flat drags, quadrunners and motorcycles are featured Thursday, and the truck pull is expected to draw a large crowd Friday.

The fair, however, also offers plenty for those not into loud engines and racing.

This year's Miss Crawford County Pageant will take place Sunday afternoon at 3 on the pavilion stage. Five young women — Ashley Paige Baker, Brittany Nicole Haley, Brandi Lewicki, Alyssa A. Ransdall and Cecelia Jane Rickenbaugh — will vie for this year's crown. (The contestants are featured in today's Style.)

Younger girls, as well as boys, will get a chance to strut their stuff later in the week. The Little Miss and Master Contest will be Monday evening, while the Pretty Baby and Tiny Tot Contest will be the next night. The contests will be in the pavilion.

Other fair events will include a car show on Saturday, the Cat and Dog Show and gospel sing on Sunday and Livestock Celebrity Fun Show on Tuesday.

However, no 4-H fair would be complete without plenty of livestock and exhibits. Livestock check-in will be on Sunday evening and Monday morning in the park's new livestock barn. Monday afternoon will feature the Horse and Pony Show in the horse arena, while Tuesday evening will offer a horse demonstration followed by the Livestock Celebrity Fun Show, both in the livestock barn.

The Beef, Sheep and Swine Show will be in the livestock barn Wednesday evening, while the Poultry, Rabbit and Goat Show will be Thursday evening in the barn. The livestock auction will be Friday evening in the livestock barn.

The Exhibit Hall, which will feature projects from 4-H members from throughout the county, in the Clover Room will open at 4 p.m. Monday through Friday.

Fair-goers seeking thrills on the Midway will be able to do so from 5 to 10 p.m. Tuesday through Saturday courtesy of All-American Rides. All-you-can-ride bracelets will cost $15 per night.

Parking will cost $2 per car beginning Tuesday; parking is free on the first Sunday and Monday.
