Birdseye band wins Showdown, on to state
August 05, 2009
The Linda Smith Band, of Birdseye, has captured a win at the Colgate Country Showdown, held May 31 in Columbus, and will now move on to compete Saturday, Aug. 15, at the Indiana State Fair.
The band, made up of Linda Smith on lead vocals and guitar, Doug Smith on rhythm guitar and backup vocals, Jason Smith on lead guitar, Reggie Brewer on bass and Paul Waninger on drums, has performed for years around the region and has produced a CD, "A Collection of Now and Then," that gained recognition recently among local fans.
Smith took her band to Columbus to compete with 10 other bands and secured the No. 1 spot, assuring it of a chance to compete at the state fair. The winner there will go on to the regional competitions later this fall and, if successful there, will continue to the nationals in Nashville, Tenn., early next year.
"The Colgate Country Showdown is probably the largest competition in the nation," Smith said. "There have been some really big names come out of those events. Martina McBride was runner-up one year back in the 1980s. It sure didn't hurt her any. And there have been others that have went on to be quite successful after competing in the event. We're really excited about it."
Some of Smith's sponsors have organized a tour bus trip to the state fair for local fans who want to make the trip and support the band on Aug. 15. The bus, provided by Audabon Trails, will leave Birdseye Park at 8:30 a.m., travel to Jasper Schroeder Park to pick up other fans and will leave there at 9. Tickets are $25 and includes the cost of the trip and admission to the state fair. The bus will return the same evening after the band's performance at the fair.
Tickets are available at Birdseye Dairy Barn (1-812-389-2220) and WITZ Radio at (1812-482-2131), or via e-mai email@example.com.
"I will also be giving an interview at WBKR Radio (92.5 FM) in Owensboro on Wednesday morning, Aug. 5," Smith said.
"And anyone making the trip to the state fair may want to bring a folding chair and a small cooler. But refreshments will be provided. No alcohol, please. And I really have to thank my sponsors who have helped make all of this possible, and WBRO, WITZ and WBKR radio stations, who have played our songs."
The Linda Smith Band will also perform at Riverstage in Jeffersonville on Friday, Aug. 14, at The Scottsburg Jamboree on Saturday, Aug. 29, at Little Nashville Opry on Friday, Sept. 4, at Harold Hutchins Country Show in Bardstown, Ky., on Friday, Sept. 25, and at the Cockadoodle Days festival in Corydon on Saturday, Sept. 26.
Sponsors who support the band include Midwest Custom Furniture, Birdseye Dairy Barn, Southern Indiana Realty, Circle A, Birdseye One Stop, Dave Smith's Construction, Cottage Inn, Riddle Title, Birdseye General Store, Ragpickers in Jasper, Phillips and Son Mobile Home Movers, Ole' Country Store in Sulphur, Randle Promotions, Like Clockwork Productions and Birdseye Trackside Tanning.
