August 26, 2009 A motorcycle crash on Pilot Knob Road south of Marengo last week claimed the life of a Crawford County man.
Joseph (Michael) Grant, 24, of Marengo, was riding a 1986 Honda motorcycle at about 12:18 a.m. Friday when he ran off the north side of the road after he started into a curve.
"Upon our arrival at the scene, Grant was laying about three feet from a tree," Crawford County Sheriff Tim Wilkerson said. "He had severe head trauma and had no pulse."
Deputy Glen Crawford, who investigated the crash, said Grant traveled 71 feet after being thrown from the motorcycle. The motorcycle traveled an additional 33 feet. Crawford also reported that the road surface was dry and the weather was clear.
According to John Johnson, who was on a motorcycle behind Grant and witnessed the crash, speed could have been a factor as Grant was thought to be traveling at 60 mph or faster.
Wilkerson said Grant was wearing a helmet and that toxicology reports are still pending.
Chief Deputy Andy Beals also assisted at the scene.
Grant's funeral was Monday at Dillman-Green Funeral Home in Marengo.
