Harrison County man arrested for attempted murder

February 17, 2010
Crawford County sheriff's deputies were called to a Milltown home Friday after receiving information that a person who had been stabbed was at the residence. A Depauw man, Donald Jason Embry, 32, was arrested the following morning after a standoff with police.

Officers went to a home at 3760 Vernon Road on the Crawford County side of Milltown, and, during an investigation, determined that the stabbing had occurred in Marengo. After being stabbed, at about 8 p.m., the victim, Todd (Matthew) Manship, 34, had driven himself home. His wife called 911 to report the stabbing.

Indiana State Police detectives were called to assist in the investigation, and officers were able to establish enough probable cause for arrest warrants to be issued by the Crawford County Circuit Court for Embry. The warrants included charges of attempted murder and battery.

Shortly thereafter, Milltown police officers located a black 1995 Chevrolet Z-26 in Embry's driveway at 108 Spencer St. on the Harrison County side of Milltown. The vehicle was reported to be the one Embry was in at the time of the stabbing.

Police officers attempted to make contact with Embry, who was inside the residence, but he did not respond. Officers maintained a perimeter around the house while the Indiana State Police Emergency Response Team and hostage negotiators arrived.

During the standoff, Jim Smith, an elder at Milltown Christian Church, opened the church to police as a place to warm up and to use as a staging and planning area. The Rev. Richard (Dick) Goodwin, chaplain for the Harrison County Sheriff's Department, brought food for the officers.

Shortly before 8 a.m. Saturday, the ERT officers made entry into the residence and took Embry into custody. He was transported to the Crawford County Jail.

Manship was taken to University Hospital in Louisville. His condition has not been released.

ISP Det. Bill Wibbels conducted the investigation and was assisted by the Crawford County Sheriff's Department, Harrison County Sheriff's Department and the Milltown Police Department.
