April 07, 2010 A two-vehicle crash on S.R. 37 Friday morning near the Crawford-Perry County line claimed the life of a Birdseye man.
A red 1992 Isuzu pickup truck driven by Leslie Deel, 30, was traveling northbound and approaching the county line shortly after 6:30 a.m. when it drifted across the center line and struck a southbound horse trailer, according to the Indiana State Police.
Deel, who is believed to have fallen asleep, was pronounced dead at the scene.
Neither Lucas A. Seitz, 24, of Jasper, the driver of the 2002 Chevrolet full-size pickup pulling the 25-foot trailer, which was loaded with scrap metal, nor his three passengers were injured.
Seitz told police he observed Deel traveling northbound partially in the southbound lane. He said he attempted to pull onto the shoulder to avoid Deel.
S.R. 37 was closed for approximately 90 minutes while emergency crews investigated at the scene. No charges had been filed as of Friday.
Assisting agencies included the Crawford County Sheriff's Department, Perry County Sheriff's Department, Perry County Fire and Rescue, Perry County EMS and Perry County Coroner's Office.
