Floyd sweeps Stargazer

For the first time in two years, the track and field season kicked off in proper fashion Friday at the Stargazer, hosted by Corydon Central. Weather wasn't an issue this time around, although the temperature dropped when the sun set.

Floyd Central outlasted each of the 15 schools to win the boys' and girls' team titles. The Floyd Central girls finished with 130-1/4 points, followed by second-place finisher North Harrison (63). On the boys' side, the Highlanders scored 94 points and were followed by North Harrison (85).

Brock Slavens had a big night for Floyd Central. In a close finish, the Highlander edged out Charlestown's Michael Baines by 1/100th of a second to win the 100-meter dash in 11.4 seconds. Slavens bounced back by also taking the 400 in 51.92. Teammate Austin Wirth finished fifth.

Also in running events, Floyd Central's Kyle Bramble finished second (23.90) in the 200. Cory Portwood took second in the 1,600 (4:38.51) and third in the 3,200 (10:16.65) events. Tyson Woolf picked up a fifth-place finish in the 800, running in 2:14.

In hurdle events, Quinton Miller finished fifth (16.66) in the 110 and third in the 300 (42.78) for the Highlanders. The Floyd Central 400 relay team took a first-place finish with a time of 45.17. In field events for the Highlanders, Logan Kelley was third in the pole vault (12-0) and Bramble was fourth in the long jump (19-3.25).

North Harrison was paced by a solid day from Jarod Richards and an impressive performance from its core of distance runners.

Richards scored a first-place finish in the high jump, clearing 6-2. He also took third place in the 110 hurdles (16.42) and fourth in the 300 hurdles (43.61).

In the 3,200, North Harrison was dominant behind the performance of Tyler Byrne. He finished the race in 9:19.81, well ahead of second-place finisher, teammate Johnnie Guy, who finished in 9:56.78.

North Harrison also placed well in the 1,600 event, with Jonathan Reynolds finishing third (4:39.80) and Ryan Foster in fourth (4:39.99). Foster also scored a third-place finish in the 800 (2:12.90), just behind teammate Peter Book, who took second in 2:11.14. As a team, North Harrison finished first in the 3,200 relay, with a time of 8:35.58. The Cougars also finished fourth in the 1,600 relay.

Other solid North Harrison finishes included Marcus Robb's third place in the long jump (19-5), Cody Morgan's fifth place in the 200 (24.81) and Nathan Klapheke's sixth place in the 110 hurdles (18.26) and seventh in the 300 hurdles (45.50).

Crawford County's best showing was a third-place finish from Johnny Schwartz in the discus throw (120-04). Jordan Newkirk scored a fourth-place finish in the high jump (5-10) and Cody Cotner was eighth in the 100 (12.61).

Floyd Central ran away with the girls' team title. The Lady Highlanders swept all three relay events: 400 (53.01), 1,600 (4:34.95) and 3,200 (10:31.96).

Also with a big day for the Lady Highlanders was Meghan Jones. She claimed first-place finishes in three events: 200 (27.50), 400 (1:02.03) and high jump (5-2).

Nikki Roberts also had a first-place finish in the 100 hurdles (16.86).

North Harrison's Emily Giles had a strong day for the Lady Cats. She finished first in the 100 (13.32), second in the 200 (28.49) and third in the long jump (14-8).

Amanda Hartley scored a second-place finish in the discus (94-3) and third in shot put (31-4) for the Lady Cats. Mallory Allgeier finished fifth in the 100 hurdles (18.49) and third in the 300 hurdles (52.68).

For Crawford County, Tessa Broughton scored a second-place finish in the 100 hurdles, running in 17.94 seconds. Also recording points for the Lady Pack were Ashlee Satterfield in the 3,200 (fifth, 14:01.91) and Taylor Cox in the high jump (sixth, 4-4).
