No joke! Plungers shiver for Blue River

March 09, 2011
Thirty-four people took the "dash to raise cold cash" and generated almost $7,000 for Blue River Services Saturday morning as they jumped into the lake at Buffalo Trace Park near Palmyra.

The annual fundraiser may not have featured as cold of temperatures as in previous years — the air temperature was in the 50s — but the off-and-on rain and cold lake water helped it live up to its "Splash and Shiver" moniker.

Following a prayer by the Rev. Edith Bleecker from Lanesville United Methodist Church, Jim and Sandy Aich sang the national anthem as Boy Scout Troop 412 of Corydon presented the colors.

Before the dash and splash, a costume contest was held, with voting done by applause. Mark Neff of the Crandall Lions Club easily was the crowd favorite with a caveman outfit complete with an inflatable club and "cavewoman" that he dragged by the hair.

"Everything was perfect," Evelyn McPherson, director of Community Relations and Fund Development, said. "We were very grateful for the break in the weather so that the participants could actually 'Take the Dash to Raise Cold Cash!' We couldn't do this fundraising event without the help we receive from the various support services and all our awesome volunteers."

Following the Splash and Shiver, a "Spirit of Blue River" celebration party was held at the Palmyra United Methodist Church Celebration Center.

Others who helped, either with safety or in other ways, included the Harrison County Parks Department, the Indiana Department of Natural Resources, the Indiana State Police dive team, Harrison County Emergency Medical Services, the Palmyra Police Department, the Palmyra Volunteer Fire Department and HERO (Harrah's Employees Reaching Out) volunteers.
