Four Stars for Morgan

Greenville, Floyds Knobs also on elite list

March 30, 2011
Morgan Elementary School has been named a Four Star School by the Indiana Department of Education. It joins Greenville and Floyds Knobs Elementary schools in being among the 188 out of 1,808 public schools and 13 out of 261 private schools in the state to receive the honor.

"Today, I offer sincere congratulations to Indiana's 2009-10 Four Star Schools as we celebrate their dedication to academics," Dr. Tony Bennett, superintendent of public instruction, said earlier this month. "These schools set high expectations for their students on a daily basis, and, as a result, students work hard and exceed those expectations.

"The students and teachers in these schools should be extremely proud of this honor, and I am confident they will continue down this path of success."

This is the first year the selections were based on revamped benchmarks for the program. The Indiana Department of Education's Office of Accreditation created the new requirements.

Lance Richards, who has been principal at Morgan since the 1999-2000 school year, said that, basically, to be a Four Star School, a school must be in the top 25 percent for passing ISTEP and have made Adequate Yearly Progress.

"This honor is given to schools that are in the top 25 percent of all schools in Indiana," he said. "This award measures our school against every elementary, middle and high school in the state.

"This news is even more terrific when you consider that the kids were taking ISTEP while the (school) building was being torn down, moved, renovated and rebuilt around them," added Richards, who was recently tapped to become the assistant superintendent, beginning June 1, for the North Harrison school district. "This is a testament to the hard work of all the students and staff. They have been terrific during the construction and renovation of our building."

The building project is expected to be completed by Aug. 1.
