Government class in session

The Crawford County Junior-Senior High School senior government class got to see government in action firsthand Tuesday afternoon, Nov. 8, as the Crawford County Council had its monthly meeting at the school.

The council met in the high school's media center, which, along with the science classrooms, underwent a recent renovation that was funded in part by riverboat gaming dollars from the county.

Following a welcome by Crawford County Community School Corp. Superintendent Dr. Mark Eastridge, the council began its meeting with individual introductions. It then got down to business.

The council took time to explain routine parts of its meetings, such as how the additional appropriation and transfer request process works, but, for the most part, conducted its meeting as usual.

After moving through its business, the council took questions from the students. Questions covered a variety of topics, including finances for roads, economic development opportunities, the proposed health care facility and the possibility of the county building an animal shelter.

"That's been a tough one," Jerry Brewer, president of the council, said in reference to the animal shelter.

Because of the costs involved, the county might be better served looking to partner with another county, he said.

"But it's a need that needs to be addressed. Bring it to the commissioners," Brewer said with a smile as the students broke into laughter.

Prior to meeting, the council was given a tour of the science labs by Eastridge.
