Y's swim team opens registration

December 28, 2011
The YMCA of Harrison County's Marlins Swim Team is accepting registrations for the upcoming season.

Swimmers, ages 5 to 18, should be able to comfortably swim a full length of the pool in both freestyle and backstroke. The season will run Jan. 3 through March 17.

Practices will be on Tuesdays, Wednesdays and Thursdays. Swimmers must be able to attend two days of practices each week in order to participate. Practice times are split by age groups: swimmers 10 and younger practice from 5:30 to 6:30 p.m., and swimmers 11 to 18 practice from 6:15 to 7:30 p.m.

Swim meets take place on Saturdays, once a month, against other teams in the Kentucky and Indiana YMCA Swimming Association. Along with the YMCA of Harrison County, KIYSA includes Scott County YMCA, Switzerland County YMCA, YMCA of Southern Indiana, Oldham County YMCA and the Northeast Louisville YMCA. All teams in KIYSA participate in the first and last meets of the season. All other meets are a dual-meet format with two teams participating.

The cost to be on the Marlins Swim Team for members of the YMCA of Harrison County is $90 for the first child, $70 for the second child and $25 for each child thereafter with a $210 family maximum. The cost for non-YMCA of Harrison County members is $110 for the first child, $90 for the second child and $30 for each child thereafter with a $260 family maximum. Fees will be prorated for those starting mid-season.

The Marlins Swim Team is a technique-based program focusing on perfecting swimmers' strokes and encouraging good sportsmanship and an attitude of excellence. Each team member participates no matter their level of skill.

"Not only is swimming a great sport for fitness, it teaches discipline, goal-setting skills and increases self-esteem from accomplishing those goals," Andy Pappano, aquatics director of the YMCA of Harrison County, said. "Swimming is a lifelong sport, and I hope each swimmer will develop a love for it."

At the Y, there are a variety of programs that help swimmers learn water safety skills, develop confidence in and around the water and enjoy the benefits of water exercise. Swim lessons are also available to all ages, abilities and swimming levels.

Financial assistance is available, with support from the Harrison County Community Foundation, for some programs as well as for membership at the YMCA of Harrison County. It is the Y's pledge, within its available resources, to provide services to individuals regardless of ability to pay. Those unable to pay the full fee may apply to receive sliding-scale assistance through the Open Doors program. Open Doors assistance is granted based on personal need, enrollment limitation and the YMCA's financial resources.
