Roberta Toby in December was elected by the Indiana State Historical Society to serve as Crawford County Historian, the position that was vacated with the death of Richard Eastridge.
Toby received the designation in December in a letter from the state historical society. Her duties include assisting anyone wishing to inquire about their roots in Crawford County.

"She will serve as the Crawford County contact for the Indiana Historical Society," Larry Burmeister, CCHGS president, said. "And she will also help regular citizens who need historical and genealogical assistance in the county."

Toby said she is looking forward to the challenge and hopes to be able to help those in need of information about their family history and the history of Crawford County.

"I just got an e-mail from someone in Terre Haute this morning," she said Monday. "They were looking for information on the Spears family. So, I'll try to find what I can for them. But I'll try to assist anyone who needs help. I will point them in the direction they need to go in order to find the information they are looking for.

"The job of county historian makes me the coordinator of historical information for the county. I'll be the resource person for historical inquiries from both within and outside the county, and I'll be an emissary, working with both the Indiana Historical Society and the Indiana Historical Bureau, promoting cooperation between them and local historical organizations."

In addition to the county historian position, Toby is vice president of the Crawford County Historical and Genealogical Society.

"I also serve as the archives director," she added. "Plus, I'm on the website committee and I'm also involved in the veterans memorial group. And as county historian, I will also have to devote time to learn new techniques and technology and be willing to be an educator, going to school classrooms or wherever I'm needed to promote our historical society and encourage young people to be involved in the county's history."

Toby can be contacted at 365-9067. Information is also available on the Crawford County Historical and Genealogical Society's website at www.cchgs.org.

Toby and her husband, Glen, reside between Marengo and English.
