NH fourth at boys' MSC swim meet

Cougar swimmer Camilotti wins 500-yard freestyle

February 01, 2012
The buzz going into the pool prior to last Tuesday's Mid-Southern Conference boys' swim meet was the potential point battle between Corydon Central and Scottsburg.

That buzz intensified during the final event, the 400-yard freestyle relay, at the YMCA of Harrison County in Corydon.

North Harrison swimmer Cezar Camilotti paces himself to victory in the 500-yard freestyle at the Mid-Southern Conference meet last Tuesday.
Both teams distanced themselves from the remaining teams in the field prior to the finale, which was won by the Panthers in thrilling fashion.

Cole McKiever, Spencer Sillings and Jared Eichmiller swam the first three legs of the race but found themselves two seconds behind the team from Scottsburg. When Eichmiller touched the wall, Corydon Central's Colin Lyell hit the water on a mission. The sophomore swam his 100 in 50.41 seconds, better than a second faster than his time in the individual race earlier.

Lyell eventually passed Scottsburg's Brandon Jerrell to set a conference record time of 3:42.55 in the event. Scottsburg took second in 3:44.97.

"We knew what we had to do," said Corydon Central coach Loretta Ettinger. "We switched some of our teams up and knew it would be close. We wanted to get Marcus Jones in another event because he mainly swims in our relays. We put in Jared Eichmiller for Marcus and knew the time would be close. Jared did great, and Colin finished it off."

With the relay victory, Corydon Central went on to tally 307 points to Scottsburg's 282. Salem finished third with 148, while North Harrison was fourth with 120.

"I love that they love to swim," Ettinger said. "We talked earlier about how our team comes in the morning, before school, for practice. We're the only team in our conference that practices before school, and it shows the dedication they have. It's hard, but they do it."

The Panthers also won the 200-freestyle relay with the team of Nick Smythe, Lyell, McKiever and Jones. They set another MSC record, swimming in a time of 1:39.33.

Lyell also came away with two individual victories. He opened with a four-second victory in the 200 freestyle with a time of 1:56.78 then backed it up with a winning mark in the 100 freestyle in 51.96 seconds. Both times set MSC records.

"He is a force and will do really well in sectional, not only individually but with the relays," Ettinger said. "Overall, this is a great young team.

McKiever finished third to Lyell in the 200 freestyle but wound up fourth in the 50 freestyle (24.96 seconds).

"Cole is coming along and continues to lower his times in a lot of different strokes," Ettinger said. "I can put him in anything and will get a strong result."

Sillings also came away with a top finish as an individual. He cruised in 1:03.37 in the 100 backstroke for first place. Eichmiller placed third, while Zach Dixon was fifth for the Panthers.

Other top five finishes for the Panthers were Smythe (fourth, 100 freestyle), Jones (fifth, 100 butterfly) and August Grubbe (fifth, 100 breaststroke). The 200-medley relay team of Sillings, Jones, Eichmiller and Smythe placed second.

North Harrison's Cezar Camilotti took the top spot in the distance event. He rolled to a victory by more than 30 seconds, swimming in a time of 5:34.57 in the 500 freestyle. Earlier in the meet, Camilotti swam second in the 200 freestyle (2:00.99).

Ben Wellner also had two strong finishes for the Cougars. He finished fourth (2:22.03) in the 200 individual medley and fourth (1:02.69) in the 100 butterfly.
