Marengo to put on 'big show'

June 27, 2012
Marengo's five-day Fourth of July celebration will kick off Saturday in the downtown area and will feature local bands, free inflatables for children, vendors, contests of all sorts and more. It will conclude next Wednesday with what organizers say will be a spectacular display in the nighttime sky.

"It's going to be a big show," said Larry Allen of Marengo Vision Alliance 47140, which has taken over the festival from the town of Marengo. "Twenty-eight straight minutes of fireworks."

Bands will include The Hiding, Sweetwater Band, Fat Cat and the Felons and Paul Smith and Co., with concerts to close out each night except Sunday, when there will be live gospel music from 2 to 5 p.m.

There will be cracker eating, ugliest animal and cake/pie contests, as well as a Little Miss pageant for girls ages 7 through 12.

Other activities will include a cake walk, a peddle tractor contest for kids and renaissance sword fighting.

On Wednesday, there will be a parade, with line-up and registration at the Marengo Elementary School parking lot at 5 p.m. Participants may also pre-register but are not required to do so. The parade will begin at 6, and winners will be announced at 7:15.
