Coming from a family of teachers I am passionate about the school funding issues in Indiana. My sister has taught third grade in an Indiana elementary school for 30 years and as of this year 2010-2011 had 34 kids in her classroom. This is inexcusable. Although the school board in our district did finally hire another third grade teacher for purposes of splitting the class, these children went three months into the school year before this decision was made. And what is even more shocking, my sister, the teacher of thirty years was being blamed by the parents for the children lacking school desks and not making it home with school assignments. With all due respect, Mr. Bennett and Govenor Daniels, do your children or grandchildren attend the public school system and if so, were any of their classrooms overcrowded or the schools closed due to budget cuts? Education should be the last resort when making budget cuts in the state. Also, 830 million in surplus. Really? Our counties are closing schools and libraries when their is an 830 MILLION in surplus. This is sad and insulting to the educaters of this state.
