Long list of concerns

Marengo, Ind.

Since there are no other biomass incinerators in Indiana, the builders must look elsewhere for information and specifications. This information is not free and has to be paid for.

The concerned citizens also have to look elsewhere for information since there are no biomass incinerators in Indiana. Take in point, the American Lung Association of Massachusetts where they state the proposed Russell Biomass Power Plant is a potential health threat to thousands of Massachusetts residents and requires the full attention of all Massachusetts citizens. Also, the Florida Medical Association and Dr. Ron Saff, who last year passed a resolution, Resolution 08-21, against all types of incinerator technologies, including biomass. Also, the data from the EPA National Emissions Inventory 2002 stating the No. 1 polluter in Vermont is the McNeil Station, a 50 wood burner biomass plant. Most citizens here do not have the means to pay for experts. But I feel the above organizations qualify.

If the two men from Texas feel an environmental im-pact study is too costly, maybe they have not considered the cost of an illness to our folks here. You know, an illness picks you; you do not pick an illness. So, how much is lung cancer these days? Asthma, COPD or heart attack — $50,000, $500,000 or $ 1 million? And if the two guys from Texas are so worried about us, why are they using Hexavalent Chromium? It is one of 90 pollutants listed in the air permit application. What is Hexavalent Chromium, you ask. It is used to prevent rust in broilers or incinerators. It is also what was found in the Hinkley, Calif., water by Erin Brockovich. There is something called environmental injustice, wrongs done to people who can't afford to, or feel they have no power to, protect themselves. This sounds like environmental injustice to me. But we do have a voice, and the time is coming soon to write to the Indiana Department of Environmental Management to request a public hearing to voice our concerns here in Milltown. I have a very long list of concerns along with many others.

A VERY CONCERNED CITIZEN.
