Jack C. Walts

Died: Monday, May 12, 2008
Jack C. Walts, 89, Norcross, Ga., formerly of Corydon, died Monday, May 12, 2008, at St. Joseph’s Hospital in Atlanta of complications arising from a fall in 2004.

Born Jan. 6, 1919, he was the son of the late Harlan and Myrtle Walts.

He graduated in 1935 from Georgetown High School when he was 16 and from Indiana University in 1939. At IU, he majored in music, was a member of Acacia Fraternity, played first chair trumpet in the Marching 100, was student manager on the basketball team and had his own campus dance band. After graduation, he taught music at Edinburgh and Middleton high schools in the early 1940s before becoming involved in the training program of the Allison Engine Division of General Motors, where he helped train pilots and mechanics on P-38 Lightning fighter aircraft. In 1942, he enlisted in the Navy, was assigned to the patrol torpedo boat branch and served in World War II as commanding officer of PT 144. After the service, he returned to Indiana and accepted a job as band director at Corydon High School, served as vice president of Hadden Films of Louisville, then joined Keller Manufacturing Co. in 1955, where he worked 37 years in numerous positions, including director of advertising and special accounts and vice president of marketing, then consultant after he retired. In 2004, he was selected by the International Home Furnishings Representatives Association as recipient of the Pillar of the Industry award. In 2007, he was selected as a “poster person” by the Norcross (Ga.) YMCA for one of their promotional pieces.

Besides his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife of 60 years, the former Margaret Jane Thomas, in October 2000.

Survivors include three children, Thomas H. Walts of Northville, Mich., Terry A. Walts of Atlanta and Jill A. Walts of Norcross; six grandchildren; and six great-grandchildren.

Visitation: Thursday, May 15, from 5 to 8 p.m. at the H.M. Patterson Funeral Home, 4550 Peachtree Road, in Atlanta, and Saturday, May 17, from 3 to 8 p.m. at Gehlbach & Royse Funeral Home in Corydon.

Funeral: Sunday, May 18, at 3 p.m. at the funeral home with burial at Cedar Hill Cemetery in Corydon.
