Edith M. Ems

Died: Thursday, September 18, 2008
Edith M. Smith Ems, 86, Borden, died Thursday evening, Sept. 18, 2008, at Floyd Memorial Hospital and Health Services in New Albany.

Born Oct. 24, 1921, in Navilleton, she was the daughter of the late Louis V. and Mary (Dena) Koetter Smith.

She farmed with her husband, Carl, raising acres of strawberries among many crops on one of the first U-pick and no-till farms in the area, and was a lifelong member of St. Mary’s Navilleton Church in Floyds Knobs.

Besides her parents, she was preceded in death by a daughter, Sheri Thomas; three sisters, Marcella Miller, Regina (Jean) Jacobi and Rita Austin; and four brothers, Callistus, Julius W., Hugh and Norman Smith.

Survivors include her husband of 67 years, Carl; three sons, Steve Ems of Sloatsburg, N.Y., and Jake and Ted Ems, both of Floyds Knobs; four daughters, Carol McMillin of Fredericksburg, Linda Jones and Dotti Whitaker, both of Georgetown, and Cindy Ems of Borden; a sister, Mary Geswein of New Albany; three brothers, Bob Smith of Floyds Knobs, Louis (Bud) Smith of Borden and George Smith of Memphis; 23 grandchildren; and 22 great-grandchildren.

Funeral Mass: Monday, Sept. 22, at 11 a.m. at St. Mary’s Navilleton Catholic Church with burial in the church cemetery.

Arrangements: Generations Funeral Home in New Albany.

The family suggests memorial gifts to Hosparus, the Community of Southern Indiana, or the American Cancer Society.
