Arvil Weilbaker

Died: Friday, March 06, 2009
Arvil Weilbaker, a former postmaster in Palmyra and Corydon, died Friday, March 6, 2009. He was 88.

Born Oct. 17, 1920, near Fredericksburg, he was the son of the late Charles and Cora Sherwood Weilbaker. He was living in Ashville, Ala., at the time of his death.

A lifelong member of the Church of Christ, he began preaching the gospel as a young man for many congregations and served as an elder in the Corydon and Ashville congregations. He spearheaded the establishment of the Corydon Church of Christ in 1974, and recorded weekly church programs for the Corydon radio station. He also lent his bass voice to gospel quartets and vocal groups for many weddings and funerals.

He was a World War II Army veteran who served stateside and in the Pacific. After an early career in home construction, he was appointed postmaster for Palmyra and then Corydon, serving a total of 40 years. He served as national vice president and editor of the national Postmasters Gazette and many other positions for the National Association of Postmasters of the United States and received that organization’s first-ever Lifetime Achievement Award.

He edited two books, “Biblical Analysis” and “NAPUS: A Century of Service to the American People,” was an honorary Kentucky Colonel and Sagamore of the Wabash, and served terms as president of the Chamber of Commerce of Harrison County, the Corydon Rotary Club and the Palmyra Crossroads Civic Club.

Besides his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife, Deenie, and a daughter, Dana.

Survivors include four daughters, Elaine Cecile of Monterey, Calif., Valerie Underwood of Ashville, Erin Wilk of Palmyra and Ann Lostutter of Madison; two brothers, Nolan Weilbaker of Palmyra and Edward Weilbaker of Fredericksburg; seven grandchildren; and two great-grandsons.

Visitation: Tuesday, March 10, after noon at the Corydon Church of Christ.

Funeral: Tuesday, March 10, at 2 p.m. at the church with burial in Palmyra Cemetery.
