Henry L. Fullenwider

Died: Sunday, December 26, 2010
Henry (Harry) Lewis Fullenwider, 94, died Sunday, Dec. 26, 2010, in the Scottsdale (Ariz.) Healthcare Osborn Medical Center.

Born Oct. 17, 1916, he was the son of the late Peter Rice Fullenwider and the former Ida Rayburn Riddle.

He joined the Navy in 1942, rose to the rank of pharmacist mate 1st class and served in Normandy during the Allied D-Day invasion on June 6, 1944. He was a graduate of English High School and Indiana University, where he earned his bachelor’s degree in education in 1948 and master’s degree in education in 1951. He taught in Crawford and Hendricks counties from 1938 to 1942, spending most of his career with the School Town of Highland District, where he served as a teacher, principal and director of elementary education. He ran a summer reading program for the children of migrant workers and served as boys’ basketball coach at Orchard Park Elementary for several years.

Besides his parents, he was preceded in death by eight siblings, Katherine Elizabeth, Robert Riddle, Rice Marshall, Mildred Louise, Eleanor Ann, Julia Rayburn, Edwin Emery and William Frans.

Survivors include his wife of 63 years, the former Ivy Morgan; three daughters, Julia Mobley of Cumming, Ga., Andrea Phillips of Phoenix and Karen Fullenwider of Peoria, Ariz.; four grandchildren; two great-grandchildren; and three great-great-grandchildren.

Burial: National Memorial Cemetery of Arizona in Phoenix.
