Forrest L. Abell

Died: Monday, January 23, 2012
Forrest Leroy Abell, 92, Birdseye, died Monday, Jan. 23, 2012, at 11 a.m. at his home.

Born Dec. 28, 1919, in Petersburg, he was the son of the late William Thomas and Mary Ethel Hilborn Abell.

He retired after 40 years from Huntingburg Machine Works, was a life member of the Disabled American Veterans in Jasper and Bethlehem Masonic Lodge No. 574 in Birdseye, was a member of VFW Post No. 2366 and Order of the Eastern Star No. 590 in Birdseye and Birdseye Christian Church, where he was a former elder and board chairman. He served in the Army during World War II from 1940 to 1945 and was stationed with the 141st Armored Signal Company and participated in the Italian and North African campaigns.

Besides his parents, he was preceded in death by a brother, Clarence Abell, and two sisters, Ruby E. Tate and Lula Morton.

Survivors include his wife of 66 years, the former Helen Virginia Pfaff; two daughters, Ava Gehlhausen of Ferdinand and Ann Leigh Deel of Birdseye; two brothers, William O. Abell of Evansville and Richard W. Abell of Leesburg, Fla.; five grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren.

Visitation: Wednesday, Jan. 25, from 2 to 8 p.m., with a memorial service at 6 by the Jasper DAV and a memorial service at 7 by the Masonic lodge, at Nass & Son Funeral Home in Huntingburg.

Funeral: Thursday, Jan. 26, at 1 p.m. at the funeral home with burial in Mentor Cemetery near Birdseye with military graveside rites by VFW Post No. 2366.

Officiant: Pastor Ron Hickman.

The family suggests memorial gifts to Birdseye Order of the Eastern Star or Birdseye Christian Church.
