William A. Birkla

Died: Saturday, March 31, 2012
William (Bill) Albert Birkla, 82, Lanesville, died Saturday, March 31, 2012, at 7 a.m. at his home.

Born July 7, 1929, in Crawford County, he was the son of the late Albert Birkla and Margaret McClanahan.

He was retired from the Army after 20 years, served two tours in Vietnam with the Special Forces Green Beret and was a lifetime member of VFW Old Capitol Post 2950 in Corydon.

Besides his parents, he was preceded in death by his first wife, the former Norma Shoemaker, in 2003; two brothers, Robert Lee and Alberta Jr. Birkla; four sisters, Trudy Miller, Dee Crone, Gerri Windell and Barbara Sue Birkla; and a granddaughter, Carly Marie Birkla.

Survivors include his wife, the former Emma (Gerri) Miller; eight children, Karen Sheller and John Birkla, both of Leavenworth, Brent Birkla of Marengo, Vicki Budd-Tudor and Darlene Vasser, both of Louisville, Lezi Becht of Greenville, Tammy Ferguson of Lanesville and Robert Birkla of Camarillo, Calif.; four stepchildren, Keith McDaniels of Lanesville, Marsha Scott of Sunset City, Calif., Ronald Pearson of Greenville, S.C., and Theresa Brooks of Corydon, Ky.; three brothers, Lester Birkla, Kenneth Birkla and Larry Birkla; three sisters, Kathleen Atkins, Alice Weatherly and Marie Bennett; 11 grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren.

Visitation: Tuesday, April 3, from 2 to 8 p.m. and Wednesday (April 4) after 9 a.m. at Denbo Funeral Home in English.

Funeral: Wednesday, April 4, at 11 a.m. at the funeral home with burial in Riddle Cemetery.

The family suggests memorial gifts to the Carly Marie Birkla Scholarship Fund in care of the Community Foundation of Crawford County.
