North Harrison’s archery program has returned for its third year, even amid an uncertain season. The teams ended their 2019-20 season with a few state titles under their belts.

North Harrison Elementary School finished second, North Harrison Middle School was fifth, North Harrison High School 12th and Morgan Elementary School finished 14th

Two students placed in the individual rankings as well. Isaac First from NHES placed third, and Erin Spurgeon from NHHS placed second.

For the 2020-21 season, the team is practicing in a 4,000-square-foot warehouse owned by Grandan Homes in New Salisbury. Ashley First, head coach of the programs, said the space Grandan donated has really helped them spread out the kids for each team.

“We had each of the students pick a buddy for the year who they alternate shooting with and use the same space,” First said. “This helps us be able to track who has been around who, and it makes it a little safer for everyone involved. I told them to pick their buddy wisely.”

First also noted that she is still unsure how the archery competitions will take place and it is still undecided if they will compete in the same space as other teams. Either way, she said, the students will have competitions.

“It may just end up being our teams competing against one another, but I am hoping that we will all be able to compete against other schools as well,” First said. “We will definitely have some competitions at North Harrison though.”

All together, there are about 215 kids participating in the archery program. Last year, there were around 200 on the team.

First said she was afraid the number of participants would drop, but she is excited to see that the kids still want to give it a try this year
