The towns of Leavenworth and Milltown will have their annual Light Up events Saturday.

Festivities will take place in Leavenworth from 2:30 to 7 p.m., kicking off with a holiday parade of lights at 2:30. The parade will travel down Second Street from Indiana Avenue to First Street, then onto S.R. 62 to circle back around to Second Street. Floats will be decked out for the holidays.

Organizers said the best seats to view the parade will be on Second Street, First Street and in front of Stephenson’s General Store and Breeden Memorial Library. All attendees are asked to wear a mask and practice social distancing.

Activities, most to take place outdoors, will follow the parade.

Children may visit with Santa from 3 to 6 p.m. at the Breeden Memorial Library. There will be free crafts for kids, and, on the plaza in front of the library, a bounce house and children’s games.

Also during that time, hay rides will be offered and there will be a petting zoo and scavenger hunt organized by 4-H.

A silent auction, in front of the library, will offer a variety of items for festival-goers to bid on until 6 p.m.

Vendors will offer wares for sale from 3 to 6 p.m. in the Lights & Love Gift Show in front of the old town hall.

At the Leavenworth Volunteer Fire Department, a chili cook-off will take place from 3 to 6 p.m. with chili from participants available to attendees.

Stephenson’s General Store will offer free hot chocolate.

From 5 to 7 p.m., the Breeden Memorial Library will have an open house with free drinks and desserts.

At 6:25, “ ’Twas the Night Before Christmas” will be read aloud in the library courtyard.

Then, at 6:30, the switch will be turned on to light up Leavenworth. A child from the county will be chosen to throw the switch. For more information or to enter the Throw the Switch Poetry Contest, visit the Light Up Leavenworth Facebook page.

There is still time to sign up to compete in the Chili Cook-Off, to enter a float in the parade and to be a vendor in the Lights & Love Gift Show. Information can be found on the Light Up Leavenworth Facebook page or by contacting Tina Brison at 812-739-4092 or by email at [email protected]
