Lady Cats’ Saunders IBCA Player of Week honoree
Ali Saunders, a junior who plays basketball for North Harrison High School, was selected as the Week 9 IBCA/Franciscan Health Player of the Week for District 3.
Saunders helped the Lady Cats to the Indian Creek Tournament title on Saturday, Jan. 2. In their first game of the day, the Lady Cats took care of Bloomington North, 54-38. The junior guard was a solid 10 of 15 from the field and 8 of 10 from the free-throw line, on her way to 28 points in the contest. She added six rebounds, three assists and five steals, as North Harrison advanced to the championship game.
In the title contest, the 5-9 guard was again involved in many ways, as she posted a double-double in a nail-biting, 54-50, championship triumph. Saunders finished with 30 points in the win, grabbed 12 rebounds and handed out a trio of assists.
This is the 13th season for the Indiana Basketball Coaches Association Player of the Week program but the first season it is presented by Franciscan Health, a corporate sponsor of the Indiana Basketball Coaches Association.
Hammond Bishop Noll senior Courtney Blakely and Noblesville sophomore Ashlynn Shade were selected as the District 1 and District 2 honorees, respectively.
Player of the Week winners are chosen each week from each of the Indiana High School Athletic Association’s three districts. Girls’ winners will be chosen through the Monday following the Indiana High School Athletic Association girls’ state finals. Boys’ winners will be chosen through the Monday following the IHSAA boys’ state finals.
Week 9 ran from Dec. 28 to Jan. 2.
